Chesapeake and Ohio Canal
The C&O Canal, 78 miles of which are located in Washington County, provided a variety of employment opportunites and a transportation corridor for the county's produce and minerals from the 1830s to 1924.

War of 1812, Sharpsburg Militia
Several militia from Washington County were formed during the War of 1812. The muster roll from Captain John Miller's company from Sharpsburg include those who enlisted.

Boyd's Business Directory, 1875, lists occupations of residents in all of the towns in Maryland, with separate entries for Cumberland and Hagerstown. Included is a list of post offices throughout the state.

Allegany County Library System, 50th anniversary, 1960-2010
July 1960 saw the establishment of the Allegany County Library System, putting the libraries in Cumberland, South Cumberland, Westernport, Frostburg, and LaVale under one system. A bookmobile was added in 1961, and the George's Creek Regional Library opened in 2001.

Military Lots, Garrett County, 1787
Soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War were rewarded by the state of Maryland with land "west of Fort Cumberland". The map of "military lots" assigned in 1787 shows the land grants in Garrett County, Maryland.

Cumberland, Maryland through the eyes of Herman J Miller

Washington County Taxes, 1803-1804
The 1803-1804 Tax records for Washington County, Maryland list the names, land holdings and possessions of those owing taxes. People were taxed on land, silver, stills, farm animals, furniture, carriages and slaves.
