Beckward to perform one-woman play

CUMBERLAND - An Evening with Debbie "Tamu" Beckward, performing her one-woman play, "3 Queen's Love," will be presented Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Metropolitan AME Church, corner of Frederick and Decatur streets. The fusion of drama, dance, comedy, music, poetry, theatrical sign language and inspiration focuses on the passion, love and sacrifices of Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King and Sonya Carson. Beckward of Gaithersburg is a nationally known professional dancer, actress, poet, choreographer, TV talk show host and radio personality who has entertained millions of people. She has performed at Constitution Hall in Washington, at George Faser's first power networking conference in Cleveland, at a social injustice event for King in Atlanta and at a spiritual movement supporting a Women in Crisis program in Philadelphia.
Tagged an artistic freedom fighter, she has shared the stage with Cornell West, T.D. Jakes, Tavis Smiley, the Rev. J. Alfred Smith Jr., The Temptations, the Four Tops, U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee and award-winning poet Lee Williams. Her mother, Jean Beckward of Cumberland, is director of the show. Tamu Beckward is a former dance movement and gymnastics instructor at the University of California at Berkeley and Emory University in Atlanta. She had supporting acting roles in the movies "Beverly Hills Cop III" and "Angels in the Outfield."
