Tracie Hiser and the Floorettes - Gymnasts

The following article appeared in the LaVale Suburbanite, Volume 18-Number 3, March 1978:

Tracie Hiser, a thirteen year old LaVale resident, has become the first gymnast in our area to qualify under the United States Gymnastics Federation, Class I rulings. Representing the Floorettes Gym Club in a U.S.G.F. meet in Pittsburgh, she scored 69.25 points, making her the 12th girl to qualify for Maryland State advanced finals to be held March 11, 1978. Competing as an advanced gymnast, Tracie will have an opportunity to advance into national competition. In addition to independent workouts at home, Tracie practices three hours a day, four days a week. Her skill level has progressed into Elite (International) level, and she is working to perfect these skills to a point that would allow her to become chosen as an Elite.

According to an additional article in the March 1978 issue of the LaVale Suburbanite, the Floorettes Competition Gymnastics Club was the "brainchild" of Edwin "Chip" Boyer, an employee of the Kelly Springfield Tire Company. The girls began by learning to tumble and developed into a group that participated in many local and distant meets. A photograph of the Floorettes from the Suburbanite also appears above.
