On the left of the photograph is the Antietam Fire Station built in 1895, in the ornate "castles and palaces" style of fire station architecture. (Antietam Fire Station website.) Renting space from the station was the Antietam Cafe, where proprietor J.J. Schlotterbeck sold beer and wine. Next to the firehall is the Post Office.

Across Summit Avenue is the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road Station, for the line that came from Weverton, the Washington County Line. The tall building behind is the Dagmar Hotel. Two additional floors were added to the building by 1923.
