R.M. Hays and Bros. photographs (- Washington County Free Library)

Hagerstown, Washington County Free Library Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

The first Washington County Free Library was built on Summit Avenue, and opened August 27, 1901. Next door to the left in this photograph is the office of the Herald newspaper and further down the street, the Nicodemus bank.

This photograph was used by many postcard makers. John Frye of the Washington County Free Library has a personal postcard collection that includes seven different prints of this picture, all tinted or colorized in some way.

R.M. Hays produced four of Mr. Frye's cards of this photograph. One, mailed in 1910, includes the electric light and pole. Most other versions have no poles or bulbs. A card mailed in 1909 was printed in Great Britain by Valentine & Sons and published by R.M. Hays of Hagerstown. Another mailed in 1909 has a subtle coloring, including a stipled sky, and has no listed printer. A card mailed in 1920 was published by Hays but the printer was Superior Quality.

The other cards were printed variously by the Williamsport Paper Company, Williamsport, Pa; Superior Post Card Co. New York and printed in Germany; and The American News Company, New York, Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden. This version of the card has the telephone pole removed from in front of the building but the top of it appears from the roof of the building.
