The laying of the cornerstone of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts was a banner occasion and much of the town turned out to mark this significant event in the history of the town. The turnout was estimated to be 1500 people. The ceremony was lead by several local fraternal organizations. Henry Holzapfel, Jr., Vice President of the Museum’s Board of Trustees, addressed the crowd on behalf of the Museum.

While neither Anna nor William Singer attended the laying of the cornerstone, Anna sent a message of congratulations via telegraph. Anna Brugh Singer’s grand-niece, four year old Anne Brugh was a participant in the ceremony on behalf of her namesake. Young Anne helped to guide the cornerstone into place as the band played “Maryland, My Maryland.” The cornerstone contained a number of mementos including photographs of the Singers and their niece, an etching of the museum, newspapers from that day, coins, a program, and a Masonic lodge book.
