The original building for the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts was designed by the New York architectural firm of Hyde & Shepherd. Built in the neo-Georgian style, the building is red brick trimmed with local limestone. When considering the location of the Museum, Hagerstown City Park was an early favorite, and the viability of the location was confirmed by architects Hyde & Shepherd after a visit to Hagerstown in April of 1928. The City gave the Museum a plot of land in the preferred location directly behind the lake. The local engineer, John B. Ferguson was selected as the building’s contractor. Ferguson worked closely with the architects and the Museum’s committee to attain the most attractive and useful building possible for the allotted amount, namely the $100,000 the Singers had designated for the building. Even so, it appears that the total costs exceeded this amount, as evidenced in the note Mavin J. Hamilton, first President of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts Board of Trustees, wrote on the back to the photograph.

Dear Jen: I though it might amuse you to see the new museum, which Anna Singer has given the town and county. The Rotunda faces the Lake–The stones outline the roadway, which leads to the Entrance, at the back of the Park. The stones will be removed as an outline when the grading is complete. The Building cost $120,000 and is very fine.
