Olden d. 8 July 1928

Dear Mrs. Hamilton:

First of all I want to thank you for telegram to the ship. I had a very pleasant crossing & arrived here on Mr. Singer’s 60th birthday. The household is exactly as you said it would be & I believe we have reached a satisfactory understanding. The museum must not cost over $100,000.00 but this figure does not include furniture, display cases, storage cabinets, book shelves, ornamental lighting fixtures, exterior grading, terraces, steps, rock blasting, or fees for professional services of architects or engineers. The dimensions of the building will have to be reduced & some of the materials changed, notably the limestone facing which will be replaced by brick, only the trimmings to be limestone.

Bill for architectural services to date to be sent to you and forwarded by you to Mrs. Singer. There is to be a delay in commencing the working plans until the legislature shall have met and authorized funds for maintenance after the building is completed. Mrs. Singer wishes the name to be changed to the “Washington County Museum of Fine Arts.” A plaque will be erected in the hall explaining that the first unit is the gift of Mrs. Singer to Hagerstown and to Washington County.

I have had a beautiful trip & am sorry to leave Olden. Today I go to Geiranger, & thence back to Oslo, Cologne, Paris, sailing home on the “Homeric” July 19th. The model remains here until you send for it at which time Mr. D. will take charge of the shipping.

Looking forward to seeing you soon after my return & best remembrances to Mr. H, Judy & the committee.
Very sincerely yours

Wm H Shepherd Jr.
