The opening of the two new wings November 15, 1949 was a grand occasion for Hagerstown, and the Museum was filled to capacity. As soon as the ribbon was cut, visitors flooded into the Singer Memorial Gallery to have their first look.

The visitors are shown flowing into the gallery between two sandstone sculptures by the Belgian sculptor Ernest Van Wynants (also Wijnants). Known as The Wise and Foolish Virgins, the figure of the wise virgin is depicted holding out a lamp while the other covers her lamp with a chained hand. Wijnants was a friend of the Singers and the two figures originally flanked a fireplace in their Blaricum, Holland home.
