The Maryland Monument

Waynesboro, Virginia, battlefield monument Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

THE MARYLAND MONUMENT

"Maryland Monument" at Antietam Battlefield, at Sharpsburg, Maryland, is the only edifice in America dedicated to the troops of both the North and the South who paid the supreme penalty for principles each believed right. For Maryland herself was the only State with military units on both sides of Antietam's conflict - -bloodiest one-day's struggle ever fought on this Continent. Fitting that Maryland is the "Hostess State" to the Governors and citizens of 29 sister-states she has invited to witness the Commemoration of the Battle of Antietam upon its 75th Anniversary and that President Roosevelt will stand near this monument to view the battle's re-enactment
