Rare Photograph of Lincoln at Antietam Placed on Exhibit

Hagerstown. A photograph of President Abraham Lincoln seated in the tent of Gen. George B. McClellan, commander in chief of the Union army at the battle of Antietam, a print not known to exist, has come into possession of the Washington County Historical society and will be displayed in the museum of relics of the battle at the National Antietam Commemoration in September.

President Lincoln arrived in Sharpsburg two weeks following the battle, and was accompanied by John W. Garrett, president of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad; Marshal Lamon, of the District of Columbia and others. They came by railroad to Frederick and rode the 20 miles from that city to Sharpsburg in an army ambulance, and remained several days with General McClellan, visiting the battlefields of Antietam and South Mountain and many of the hospitals.
