Miss Antietam Is Crowned As Fete Is Begun

— Antietam Celebration Underway; 75th Anniversary of Battle

HAGERSTOWN, Md., Sept. 4—
A dainty miss stepped out of the past last night to become for two weeks the symbol of romance and of daring.

She doffed her modern-times mannerisms to revert to the customs and the costumes of the past, symbolizing the spirit that took the boys of blue and those of gray to battle on Antietam fields.

Miss Julia Brandt curtsied before throngs gathered in an amphitheater last night; arose as "Miss Antietam"—the title she will bear for the next two weeks.

William P. Lane, former attorney general of Maryland, aided by Park T. W. Loy, and Mayor E. Lee Elgin, presented to her the symbols of her post of honor.

A prevue of the historical pageant "On Wings of Time", featuring 1,500 actors, was held and everything was in readiness for the official opening this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock by United States Senator Millard E. Tydings, chairman of the United States Antietam Celebration Commission.

Hagerstown is dressed up for the celebration, which in addition to commemorating the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Battle of Antietam, will also celebrate the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the first settler in Washington County and the founding of Hagerstown 175 years ago. Aerial bombs and factory whistles will salute the commemoration opening today.

Last night a coronation ball in honor of "Miss Antietam" and her court was held at the State Armory.
