Bloody Lane Looking East.

To the left is Roulette Lane. At this point French and Richardson encountered the Confederates well fortified in this old sunken road with snake fence on both sides grown up with trees and bushes, under Colquitt, Gordon, Grodes, G.B. Anderson and Wright. Some of the most terrific fighting took place here. The lane was infiladed with canisters shot by Richardson from a position left of the Observation Tower. The losses were heavy on both sides. Gen. Richardson fell mortally wounded near the Observation Tower, G.B. Anderson fell on the crest of the hill to right of picture. Here dead lay piled as much as 4 deep. To right is 8th Ohio, and to left is 132 Pa Monuments. The 75 ft stone tower stands at the angle of the lane. On the high part of the mountain was the Union signal station about 3 miles distant.
