HAGERSTOWN.
THE QUEEN CITY OF THE VALLEY.

CHAPTER I

GENERAL FEATURES.

HAGERSTOWN, Maryland, is situated in the midst of the great and fertile valley, lying at the foot of the Alleghany Mountains and extending from the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg, Pa., to the northern limits of Alabama. This valley is known in Pennsylvania and Maryland as the Cumberland Valley, and in Virginia as the Valley of the Shenandoah. But it is one continuous and homogeneous valley —well watered by numerous and beautiful streams, fed by great springs which gush out of the limestone rocks. The soil is most fertile limestone, carefully and skillfully tilled, and the surface is beautifully undulating, presenting a varied scene of hill and dale and plain, with the blue Mountains limiting the view to the East and the West.
"- It is a goodly sight to see
What Heaven hath done for this delicious land !
What fruits of fragrance blush on every tree !
What goodly prospects o'er the hills expand!"

The agricultural and horticultural productions embrace everything belonging to the latitude and everything is produced in great perfection. Washington
