Prospect street, of the mountain and the valley and a large part of the town, is very fine. This street is a favorite place of residence.
The lower sections of the town range over 560 feet above the level of tide water.

THE STREETS.
The streets are made of limestone, which is broken and laid down to a great depth and topped with stone crushed very fine, and then rolled with a heavy iron road roller weighing 30 tons, which packs the streets into a solid and smooth mass of stone, very durable and as smooth as asphaltum, making streets of a very superior character. The side walks are well paved generally, and vary in width from 6 to 12 feet. The gutters and underdrains are well kept and are always free from whatever is offensive.

HEALTH AND DRAINAGE.
The high situation of Hagerstown, its distance from water and the pure mountain air of the valley, combine to make the town remarkably healthy. It is absolutely free from endemic diseases. Malarial diseases, such as chills and fever, are unknown, and there is an absence of many other diseases which distress the population of lower situations. Ten Thousand Dollars have been voted by the people to perfect a system of drainage by sewers. The water sheds of the town are so situated that a small number of sewers will relieve the whole town of sewage and deliver it into a rushing stream far out of the corporate limits. This improvement will be speedily made.
