BATTLE OF ANTIETAM COMMEMORATIVE HALF DOLLARS

The coin was authorized by a Special Act of the 75th Congress of the United States. It was designed by William Marks Simpson, noted sculptor of Baltimore, Md. The obverse side bears the profiles of Generals Lee and McClellan; the reverse, the Burnside Bridge. The coins were sponsored by the Washington County Historical Society to help finance the celebration and 18,000 sold at a cost of $1.65.

Notes:
Not all were happy with the design. Some complained about having a general who tried to destroy the Union on a United States coin; others that Lee was given priority over McClellan.
