HAGERSTOWN, MARYLAND.

and the total bonded debt to be $22,000, showing a reduction of the bonded debt, as annually provided for, of $2,000 principal and $1,000 of the interest account. If to this cash balance on hand be added the uncollected taxes and other items due to the town, it would practically wipe out the entire city indebtedness, without reaching the real estate owned by the city. The Annual Tax Levy made June 8th, 1886, was as follows:

FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES—

Special Improvement Bonds        3 cts
Water        3 cts
Drainage Fund and Interest        2 cts
Total       15 cts

FOR GENERAL PURPOSES—
Streets       11 cts, 3 mills,
Police        2 cts, 5 mills
Grades and Street Cleaning        2 cts
Fire Purposes        2 cts
Codification of Ordinances and Printing        1 ct
Salaries        7 cts
Street Lighting        1 ct, 2 ½ mills
Elections       1 mill
Stationery.        1 mill
Repairing Town Property.       1 cts, 7 ½ mills
Court House and Jail Expenses        1 ct
Total levy       45 cts

In the above levy, the special item of 2 cts. for drainage fund and interest was levied to provide for the payment of interest on $10,000 or as much thereof as may be needed to improve the present drainage of the town. None of these bonds have been, so far, sold or used in any way. Under the charter of the town no greater sum than 30 cts. on the one hundred dollars can be levied upon the assessable property for general purposes. The Mayor
