Hagerstown: An Illustrated Description,

Baltimore and Western Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

O. road, Washington, DC, is 75 miles from Hagerstown and is reached in three hours, and Baltimore in from four to five hours. The historic and beautiful scenery of Harper's Ferry and its vicinity are easily accessible to the people of Hagerstown by this route.

THE BALTIMORE & WESTERN.

There is every probability that in a short time another and a very important railroad will be completed to Hagerstown. It has been incorporated under the above name and is designed to connect the West Virginia Central with the Western Maryland road at Hagerstown, and over it reach tide water at Curtis Bay, Baltimore. The West Virginia Central road, of which Hon. Henry G. Davis is President, is the outlet for the rich Elk Garden coal region, besides giving access to a great region rich in timber and other valuable products. Steps have already been taken to extend this road to a connection with the Chesapeake & Ohio road at the Ohio river, giving it access to the West. When it reaches Hagerstown it will furnish cheap coal — the one thing necessary to complete the advantages of the town as a railroad and manufacturing centre.
