Sara Roberta Getty, 1880 - 1973

Sara served as Woman’s Editor for the Cumberland Daily News from 1924 to 1942. The following poem was written by her and appeared in the Frostburg Mining Journal, March 18, 1911.

Little Boys of Mine
Dedicated to my little boys, born January 8, 1899; one of whom died ten days later; the other March 20, 1900. At rest in Allegany Cemetery (now Frostburg Memorial Park), Frostburg, Md.

Dear little brown-eyed boys of mine – out in God’s acre sleeping!
There, side-by-side, their tiny forms are Laid away to rest!
Safe-sheltered from all harm, their souls are in the Father’s keeping;
He gave, and took away again, because He deemed it best.

One stayed so short a while – his span of life was all too fleeting!
One morn I asked then for my babe – O, anguished heart, too late!
Another year, and, like a bird against the cage bars beating.
The other little life had flown aloft to seek its mate.

How oft I think of my dear boys when thus the past reviewing
Two sturdy, manly lads they’d be were they but with me now!
Eager and brave to choose the right in thinking and in doing.
Their dear hearts filled with faith and trust, and God to show them how.

Be still! Be still, sad heart of mine! Why are you filled with sorrow?
You know that through green pastures to your dear ones He will lead you.
Ah, yes! I know I’ll see them on that brighter, fairer morrow,
But, O Dear, brown-eyed boys of mine, I need you – how I need you!
