WJEJ - 75th anniversary, Battle of Antietam

Grover Crilley's description of the battle and the battlefield as it was in 1937. Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

WJEJ is the Hagerstown radio station that became the fifth radio station in Maryland when it went on-the-air in 1932. Grover Crilley started the station, one of only about 620 radio stations in the world at that time.

This is the text of his narration at the commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. It is the prepared text giving the background of the battle and describing the history of some of the monuments Crilley could see from the lookout tower at the battlefield. It does not describe either Roosevelt's arrival or the re-enactment.

The text also includes a list of the veterans present at the event. Mr Crilley presented the copy of the text he prepared to Amos Klinkhart, for his father John Klinkhart, a veteran from New York, who was present at Sharpsburg for the battle itself and the commemoration.
