This photograph of the Washington Monument on South Mountain was taken by C. D. Young, a Boonsboro photographer. It was colorized by William Downs.

The library owns the painting, which was in a Brining and Bast frame. The Brining cabinet and undertaking business begun in 1837 by Christian Brining became the Brining and Bast Furniture and Undertaking shop in Boonsboro in 1908.

Doug Bast of the Boonsborough Museum of History has dated the photo as taken in the late 1890s, given the condition of the tower. He owns a postcard of this picture printed in 1907.

The tower was built by the citizens of Boonsboro in 1827 on South Mountain above Boonsboro.
