HARTZELL, DAVID PERCY

“D. Percy Hartzell Dead of Meningitis. Well Known Interurban Trolley Official Never Recovered from Influenza Attack in October. David Percy Hartzell, aged 54 years, died at his home on Cumberland street at 3:45 o’clock this morning after an illness of meningitis of the brain of which he was a sufferer for ten months. Mr. Hartzell was a victim of influenza last October and had been in ill health ever since. Although he had been bedfast for a week, his condition did not become extremely serious until 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Mr. Hartzell was for the past fourteen years secretary and treasurer of the Cumberland and Westernport Electric Railway. He was superintendent of the First Presbyterian Sunday school and a member of that church. For many years he has been an active member of the Duke Memorial Bible Class. Surviving are his wife, who was before her marriage, Miss Margaret Elizabeth Williams of Frostburg, two sons—Foster Hartzell, Bartlesville, Okla., and Henry Hartzell, at home; one sister—Mrs. Edward Light; two halfsisters—Mrs. Ruth Husted and Mrs. Bessie Hill, and a stepmother, Mrs. C.F. Hartzell, all of Hyndman. Funeral arrangements will be completed after the arrival of Foster Hartzell from Bartlesville.” [CET 9-4-1919, p. 1];
“Funeral of D.P. Hartzell. The funeral of D. Percy Hartzell will be held tomorrow, the cortege leaving the family residence at 2 o’clock. Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, after which the funeral party will go by automobile to Frostburg, where interment will be made in the Percy cemetery. The following will act as pallbearers: Albert C. Grant, Allan B. Spier, John T. Edwards, F.W. Burrows, F.B. Jenkins and D.D. Price. Foster Hartzell, a son, is on his way from Oklahoma and will arrive early tomorrow.” [CET 9-5-1919, p. 8]

“Mrs. Hartzwell [sic], wife of C.F. Hartzwell [sic], Esq., and daughter of the late David Percy died at the residence of her husband in Frostburg on Tuesday of last week. Mrs. Hartzwell was a most estimable lady, beloved by all who knew her, and the sudden death that was such a bereavement to her family and friends cast a gloom over the whole community. Her funeral took place on Friday and was largely attended by persons from all parts of the country.” [MCT 12251869, p. 3]
