“Sudden Death—James McDonald, son of A. McDonald, Esq., of Barton, aged seventeen years, died very suddenly Tuesday morning at his father’s residence. He went to bed Monday night in his usual good health, and was found dead, or nearly so, next morning. Rupture of a blood vessel is supposed to have been the cause of death. He was a member of Barton Lodge of Good Templars, which, with large delegations from Lonaconing and Frostburg, attended his burial at this place Wednesday.” [FMJ 9-4-1880, p. 3]

“Mrs. Elizabeth McMillan died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. W.R. Coyner, this place, today. The funeral services will be held in the Lutheran church, Sunday, conducted by Rev. E.C. Jessup.” [CDT, 3-3-1888, p. 3]

“At the residence of William R. Coyner, this place, yesterday afternoon, March 2, 1888, Mrs. Elizabeth McMillan, aged about 84 [sic] years. Mrs. McM. had long been a resident of this county. She leaves a son, William, and a daughter, Mrs. Coyner. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon.” [FMJ, 3-3-1888, p. 1]

“Mrs. Elizabeth McMillan, whose death was reported in the TIMES on Saturday, was buried from the Lutheran church yesterday at 2 o’clock, Rev. Mr. Jessup officiating. The interment was in Percy’s graveyard.” [CDT, 3-5-1888, p. 3]

“Died—Eli, the 9-year old son of John Mears, of this vicinity, died Thursday. He was hurt in the mine several months ago.” [FMJ 2-8-1896, p. 3]

“Death of a Young Man.—The Journal erred last week in reporting the death on Thursday, 6th inst., of Eli Mears. He was the son of Samuel, not John Mears, and was 16, not 9 years old. The funeral Sunday afternoon at the Episcopal church was largely attended, not withstanding the very cold weather.” [FMJ 2-15-1896, p. 3]

Notice of Mr. Mears death was also found in SJE.

MERRILL, NOAH

“Noah was the son of William and Francenia (Holtzman) Merrill. William and Francenia appear on the 1850 census of Allegany County, Maryland in dwelling No. 275/275 with children Noah age 16, Dorothy age 13, William P. age 11, Martha age 9, Margaret age 6, Joseph age 4, and Charles age 2. (Charles Franklin Merrill married Francis Marion Burton, daughter of John Wesley Burton and Ellen Jane McKenzie on November 19, 1871 in Allegany County. Both are buried Allegany Cemetery). Noah Merrill married Sarah Miller probably November 16, 1853. On the 1860 Allegany County census he and Sarah had 3 children, Jenny (Jane?) age 5, Lloyd age 3, and Sarah age 7 months.” [Gloria Gatewood, letter of 2-22-1987]

Mr. Merrill was listed as a Civil War soldier [CET 5-29-1912, p. 11]
