THOMAS, ANNIE E.
(daughter of MORGAN and BARBARA THOMAS)- (Continued)

A moment longer here.

God has taken darling Annie,
And our loss we feel;
But ‘tis He that bereft us—
He can all our sorrow heal.

Who could wish her longer stay
In such a world as this,
Since she has gained the realms of day
And pure, undying bliss.
A FRIEND

“Found Dead in Bed. Mrs. Barbara Elizabeth Thomas, wife of the late Morgan Thomas, who resided with her daughter, Mrs. George Harvey, Borden Shaft, was found dead in bed this morning by her sister, Mrs. Alfred Burton, Frostburg. Mrs. Thomas had been ailing but her condition was not regarded as serious. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters and the Daughters of Rebekah. Surviving are one son, William Thomas, mine foreman for the Frostburg Big Vein Coal Company, and two daughters, Mrs. William Kear, Frostburg, and Mrs. Harvey. There are three sisters besides Mrs. Burton—Mrs. Daniel Lewis and Mrs. Solomon Hansel, Frostburg and Miss Ada Chaney, Shaft. Mrs. Thomas was a native of Frostburg and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Chaney”. [CET 8-29-1916, p. 6]

“The residents of Shaft and Frostburg turned out in large numbers to attend the funeral of Mrs. Jennie Thomas, held from the home of daughter, Mrs. William Kear, Hill street, Sunday. The pallbearers were: J.J. Price, John Richardson, Lewis Lewis, Henry Powell and Robert Biddington. Flower bearers Carl Thomas, Charles Thompson, Frank Lewis, Edward Lewis, Edward Dufty and Morgan Hansel, all nephews. Rev. Thomas R. Van Dyke, of the First M.E. Church; Rev. Mr. Williams, of the Congregational Church and Rev. Edward C. Gallaher, of the Shaft M.E. Church, officiated. Burial was in the Percy Cemetery.” [CET 9-3-1916, p. 8]

Apparently, Barbara Thomas was also called Jennie Thomas. The headstones of at least two of her children refer to her as Jennie rather than Barbara.
