WALKER, GEORGE W.
(husband of MARGARET BARRICK WALKER)
b. December 1, 1807
d. January 17, 1885
“Death of an Old Citizen. George W. Walker, born near Boston, Mass., Dec. 1, 1807, died at Borden Shaft, Jan. 17, 1885. Mr. Walker came to Frostburg about the year 1842, and subsequently accepted employment under the old Maryland coal company, then operating at Eckhart. With this company he remained thirteen years, at the expiration of which time he removed to Bradford, Pa. Eighteen months later he returned to this vicinity, taking employmet under the Borden mining company at Borden Shaft in 1860, where he resided continuously to the day of his death. At this place he held the offices of weigh master and manifest clerk 25 years. He weighed and shipped nearly all of the immense volume of coal which has gone out of the Shaft. Mr. Walker was a sober, steady, industrious, honest citizen. He filled his sphere of usefulness well and rendered perfect service to all his employers in all vocations to which he was called. Fond of his family and home, he was always near his post of duty. About two years ago he sustained a severe stroke in the death of his wife, since which he has circulated more than usual among the families of his children, where his kindness and tenderness made him an ever welcome guest. The immediate survivors of his family are one daughter, Mrs. Johnson Collins, of Meyersdale, Pa., and two sons—Postmaster C.H. Walker, of this place, and George K. Walker, merchant, Salisbury, Pa. The funeral took place at the English Lutheran Church, of which he was a member. The remains were thence laid beside those of his wife in the graveyard on the hill.” [FMJ 1-24-1885, p. 3]
He was a member of Frostburg Lodge, No. 590, Knights of Honor in 1877 and also the treasurer [Scharf, p. 1492].

“At Borden Shaft, near this place, Saturday, October 28, 1882, Mrs. MARGARET WALKER, wife of George W. Walker, Esq., aged 70 years. Mrs. Walker was born at Loudon, Pa., in 1812; her maiden name was Barrick. Three sisters and one brother survive her—Mrs. Eliza McLaughlin and Mrs. Sallie Higgins, of Loudon, Pa., and Mrs. Susan Hays and Mr. Leonard Barrick, of Gettysburg, Ohio. Charles H. Walker (postmaster) of Frostburg, Md., George K. Walker, of Elk Lick, Pa., and Mrs. Eva Collins, of Meyersdale, Pa., are children of the deceased. Mrs. Walker was a lady of thoroughly domestic habits, signalizing her usefulness by constant attention to home affairs. Esteemed for her many virtues by a wide acquaintance and beloved by her family and relatives, the last sad tribute was paid Monday by a large concourse of friends who attended her remains to interment in Percy’s graveyard, this place.” [FMJ 11-4-1882, p. 3]

d. November 10, 1847
“I notice you found a headstone for John Welch, who died in 1847 at the age of 76. Isabella Clary's father was John Welch (according to the book called the National Pike road or the old National Pike in which he is referred to as Aden Clary's father-in-law). Is this headstone near that of Isabelle?...Perhaps this John is the father who was born in Pa. and was a tavernkeeper there.” [letter from Mary M. Carrera, Reseda, CA, 11-23-1986]
