Richard Milhous Nixon, page 3

In 1972, and with the slogan, "Nixon: Now More Than Ever", he defeated George McGovern (1922-2012) in a landslide.

Nixon buttons depicted here include a button which indicates the support of women and the promise of equality. The name, Nixon, along with its Hebrew equivalent, is also graphically portrayed.

McGovern had initially decided upon Missouri Senator, Thomas Eagleton (1929-2007), as his running-mate. Eagleton's past hospitalizations due to physical and nervous exhaustion resulted in his being replaced on the ticket by Sargent Shriver (1915-2011). McGovern was against the war and the campaign slogan was, "Come Home America." Buttons reflecting peace, the environmental symbol, the youth vote, employment, and women's issues (similar to the Nixon button) are all represented here. An Eleanor McGovern (1921-2006), for "First Lady" button is also portrayed from the 1972 campaign.

In the bottom right-hand corner is a button for American Independent Party candidate, John G. Schmitz. He received 1,099,482 votes, nationwide. This was far less than George Wallace's 9,906,473 in 1968
