George Walker Bush (1946- ), page 1
Forty-Third President
Term in Office: 2001-

George Walker Bush, is the son of George Herbert Walker Bush, the Forty-First President of the United States. George Walker Bush, or "Dubya/W" as he is known, was elected Governor of Texas in 1994. He went on to win both the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections. A Republican, his running mate in both campaigns was Richard B. Cheney (1941- ).

In 2000 Bush defeated Albert A. Gore of the Democratic Party, and Ralph Nader (1934- ), the Green Party candidate and who captured 2,882,955 popular votes. In 2004, Bush defeated the Democratic Party nominee, John F. Kerry (1943- ), a United States Senator from Massachusetts, and his running-mate, a United States Senator from North Carolina, John Edwards (1953- ).

Several major events occurred during the administration of George W. Bush. On September 11, 2001 America suffered an attack by terrorists on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in the skies and fields of Pennsylvania. This has led to what has commonly been referred to as the "War on Terrorism." Though wide-spread, most notable has been the hunt for al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, and the controversial 2003 invasion of Iraq. At this writing both of these conflicts are continuing. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the north-central Gulf Coast causing massive damage, especially to the City of New Orleans. The equally massive failure of government, at all levels, in advance of and in response to Katrina remains to this day. In the fall of 2008 the nation also began to experience a major economic downturn characterized by tight credit, a housing-loan crisis, high energy prices, job losses, a falling stock market, and federal bail-outs. In terms of domestic policy, a major initiative of his administration has been the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 focusing upon the education of America's children.

Among the 2000 buttons depicted on this page is a button from a fundraising concert held for Al Gore at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on August 17, 2000. Headlining the event, and portrayed on the button, is Barbra Streisand (1942- ). The Hebrew equivalent of Gore/Lieberman is also presented on a button, along with the Hebrew calendar of 5761, which was the year 2000 for "us". Two Ralph Nader Green Party buttons are also shown.
