John Sydney McCain III (1936- )

Arizona Senator John McCain was the Republican nominee in the 2008 Presidential election. He was defeated on November 4, 2008 by Barack Obama.

John McCain served as a naval bombing pilot during the Vietnam War. In 1967 his plane was shot down and McCain became a prisoner of war in the "Hanoi Hilton" until his release in 1973. "Hanoi Hilton" was a nickname given to the North Vietnamese prison camp used for American prisoners of war from 1964 to 1973. McCain was elected to the United States House of Representatives from Arizona in 1982 and served in the House until his election to the United States Senate in 1986. Among the McCain buttons featured here is one with his wife, Cindy Lou Hensley McCain (1954- ).

McCain's Vice-presidential running-mate was Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (1964- ). Palin was elected to that office in 2006 and is the first woman to serve as Governor of Alaska. The "Alaska's Ticket" button was purchased from Polar Bear Gifts in downtown Anchorage, "Alaska's Largest Gift Store."
