Dear Sir
       Your message just received. Have arranged at mines to obtain the number of men who will march in the procession and hope to report tomorrow or next day.

The miners did not however march in the parade.

One important feature of this parade, however, they were doomed not to see, and that was the great body of sturdy miners, the men by whose bone and sinew the wealth of Allegany county has been rescued from the bowels of her mountains, who were to appear in the procession. That this part of the program had to be omitted was a subject of general regret. But their presence in the city in such large numbers with their families was gratifying to the citizens of Cumberland who have always appreciated their attendance here. ...(From undated newspaper cutting in Mr. Luman's journal).
