Clayton Cottage
Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information
Clayton Cottage was one of the first cottages, built in 1882. The earliest owner of record for this area in the Garrett County land records is U.A. Clayton, a B & O railroad officer who owned the house from 1892 to 1915.
The house is considered Cottage Gothic or Victorian in style. The influence of the Methodist Episcopal Association is particularly noticeable in the elaborate church window frames and suspended crosses on the gables. These, as well as the fancing siding, shingles and striping, are all excellent examples of workmanship during the Victorian era.
Clayton Cottage is located on a hillside above the Mountain Lake Park Town Hall and historic clay Tennis Courts, site of the oldest tennis tournament in Maryland.
