The home of the Shifler family as it appeared in the 1880s. This is the side of the house that looks towards Route 67. George Shifler inherited the land from John and Susan Shifler in 1869 (Deed reference - WMcKK1/513, per Edie Wallace, Marble Quarry Road: Phase I Archeological Investigation of Bridge W-6083 over Little Antietam Creek, Washington County, Maryland, 2006.)

The History of Washington County, Maryland, (Williams, 1906), includes in the entry about George Shifler: "In 1896 a marble quarry was opened on his farm which is leased to a company now actively engaged in shipping marble of a quality equal to that of any now in the market."
