Carte-de-visite of John Brown

taken in Akron, 1858. Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

Jean Libby of Palo Alto, California, the donor of the carte de visite, has researched this image. It is an albumen print. The back of the image has stamped with "Philadelphia Photographic Company". She states that the photograph was taken in Akron in 1858.

The Summit County Historical Society's book, At home on the hill, the Perkins Family of Akron, also includes this image of Brown and stated that the image was taken by Benjamin Franklin Battels of Akron in 1856.

Libby wrote in the John Brown Photo Chronology, presented at Harpers Ferry in mid-2009 for public exhibition at the sesquicentennial in October – December, 2009:

John Brown and his young family moved from Richfield, Ohio, to Akron in 1844, as the junior partner with Simon Perkins in a wool business. They moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, by 1848; various members of Brown’s extended family lived in the Perkins rental house (now restored and owned by the Summit County Historical Society) from 1842 until 1855.

Battels’ daguerreotype studio on 106 East Market Street opened in Akron in early 1855. Earlier he had practiced in Weymouth, relatively close to Richfield. Earlier dating of this image may reflect this origination. The Philadelphia Photographic Company, a reprint house, opened on 730 Chestnut Street in 1862. The albumen print is at most two generations from the original daguerreotype.
