Axel Steele, marble cutter

Axel Steele seated on the base of the Clara Barton monument on the Antietam Battlefield, unveiled September 9, 1962. Mr. Steele worked at the nearby marble quarry which produced the piece used in this memorial. In the background is the Poffenberger barn.

The plaque on the monument reads:
Clara Barton
During The Battle of Antietam September 17, 1862
Clara Barton brought supplies and nursing aid to the wounded on this battlefield
This act of love and mercy led to the birth of the present American National Red Cross
