FIRST WREATH AT NEW MONUMENT—

Mrs. J. Alvey Long, former chairman of the Washington County Chapter of the American National Red Cross, places a wreath before the newly rededicated monument to Clara Barton on Antietam Battlefield. The wreath-placing was the climax of ceremonies at the new monument yesterday afternoon when Gen. Alfred M. Gruenther, president of the American National Red Cross, addressed a throng of nearly 1,000 at the monument site along Mansfield Ave. It was during Mrs. Long's chairmanship that the project was initiated to erect a suitable memorial to the Civil War nurse who later was to found the Red Cross in this country.
