Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a Democrat, unsuccessfully sought the Governorship in 2002 but lost to the Republican candidate, Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. One of the buttons depicted here is from the September 10, 2002 Democratic Primary. Townsend is shown along with J. Joseph Curran who served as Attorney General of Maryland from 1987-2007, and William Donald Schaefer who along with serving as Governor of Maryland from 1987-1995 was later elected Comptroller serving from 1999-2007. The other Townsend button was issued by her supporters from Washington County.

Martin J. O'Malley, a Democrat, defeated Robert Ehrlich in the 2006 gubernatorial election. One of the three O’Malley buttons portrayed on this page is from his January 17, 2007 Inauguration which took place in the State Capitol, Annapolis, Maryland. In a 2010 rematch, O'Malley again defeated Ehrlich in the November 2010 General Election.

Robert “Bob” L. Ehrlich, Jr. (1957- ), a Republican, was elected Governor of Maryland in the election of 2002, defeating the Democratic candidate, Kathleen Kennedy Townsend. Ehrlich received 879,592 votes, or 51.55% of the total cast. Ehrlich was defeated in his 2006 re-election bid by Martin O'Malley. The button shown here is from that election and identifies his running-mate for Lieutenant Governor, Kristen Cox. In a 2010 rematch, O'Malley again defeated Ehrlich in the November 2010 General Election.
