Students Use Bookmobile

Among the sixty scheduled winter stops of the Allegany County Bookmobile are McCoole Elementary School, Bloomington School, Barton School, Latrobe St. in Barton, Luke City Lot, Tri-Towns Plaza, Paradise St. in Midland and Douglas Ave. in Lonaconing.

The librarians, Kathryn (Cassie) Whetstone and Jean Jackson, say some 7 to 8,000 books are circulated during the nine months of the school year and another 5,000 during the summer.

Schools along their route set up schedules, usually allowing each class 15 minutes to browse and check out the books from the 13,075book collection. The shelves are well stocked now as compared to the 900 original books when the first bookmobile travelled Allegany County roads in April of 1961. LSCA Title I funds were used to purchase that Dodge bookmobile.

The present bookmobile was put into operation in August of 1971, the second to be purchased for the county. The $22,450 Model BFC170 was manufactured by the Thomas F. Moroney Company Inc. and has an International Harvester Chassis, a six-speed transmission and air conditioning for the summer months, when there's 77 stops (17 more than the winter months).

One story hour for children is also given each week during the summer.

During fiscal year 1980-81, the bookmobile travelled 11,146 miles and circulation hit 82,240.

Frederick W. Warnick of Westernport serves on the Board of Library Trustees overseeing the Bookmobile's operation.

Among the stops this coming week for the bookmobile are Bloomington School Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to noon; Barton School Wednesday from 1:15 to 3 p.m. and Latrobe St. in Barton from 3:30 to 4 p.m.; Luke City Lot Friday from 11:30 to 11:45 a.m.; Tri-Towns Plaza Friday from 1 to 1:15 p.m. and McCoole School Friday from 1:30 to 3 p.m.

Usually, two weeks are given before books are due therefore the bookmobile comes around every two weeks.
