For Convenience Of Public
Library Microfilms Back Local Newspaper Issues

Ever throw away a newspaper and then regret it later because there was something in it for reference material?

This happens to most from time to time, so the Allegany County Library, Washington Street, has decided to come to the public's assistance with a modern microfilm reader and printer.

The new equipment, purchased for $3,000 through a federal library grant, not only allows ready access to thousands of back issues of the Cumberland Evening Times, but can also print in a matter of seconds a copy of any page.

Robert L. Neal, director of the Allegany County Library System, points out that issues of the Evening Times from October, 1946 through February, 1974 are available and additional years will be added as funds become available. Back issues of the New York Times on microfilm will also be purchased in the future.

Copies of any page, available at the rate of 15 cents per copy, are printed on negative film which means the printing comes out white on black. The copies are, nevertheless, very clear and readable but, of course, photographs are reproduced as negatives. A positive printing process was available, Mr. Neal notes, but at a much higher cost.

Mr. Neal also stated that, "We here at the library are proud to be able to offer this new and valuable service to the public." Persons desiring to use the microfilm are requested to stop first at the front desk where they will be given instructions on how to operate the equipment.

Audio cassettes, slides, filmstrips, 8 mm and super 8 mm films are also now available at the main library as well as the branches in Frostburg, LaVale, Westernport and South Cumberland.

LIBRARY MICROFILM — Mrs. Dorothy Dove, children's librarian at the Allegany County Library, Washington Street, is shown here demonstrating the recently acquired microfilm reader and printer. With the new equipment, the public may view copies of the Cumberland Evening Times from October, 1946 through February, 1974 and make copies of any page as needed. Other years will be available as funds permit.
