The General Assembly of Maryland in 1789 passed an Act entitled, "An Act for the division of Washington County, and for the erecting of a new one by the name of Allegany." Cumberland, by a vote of the people, was selected as the county seat. To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the organization of the county and the growth, progress and cultivation of our section of the county, rich in historic associations and endowed with natural wealth and picturesque loveliness, it has been determined to hold three days of rejoicing, arranged as follows:
FIRST DAY - Monday, September 23d.
Morning - parade of the School Children of the county, concluding with exercises in the Public Square.
Afternoon - Literary Exercises in the handsome and commodious
ACADEMY OF MUSIC
Oration by Hon. HENRY W. HOFFMAN
HISTORICAL ADDRESS by GEORGE L. WELLINGTON, Esq.
CENTENNIAL POEM by Hon. JOHN L. THOMAS, of Baltimore City.
During these exercises Music will be furnished by a splendid chorus of voices, accompanied by a magnificent orchestra.
SECOND DAY - Tuesday, September 24th.
GRAND TRADES DISPLAY
On the morning of this day there will be given a presentation in Parade of all of the Industries of the County, showing the practical working of Iron, Wood, Metal, Glass etc., and a splendid and tastefully arranged exhibit of Goods and Wares, by the Merchants of the County. Foremost among old Allegany's resources are her illimitable deposits of Bituminous Coal, to the early development of which is chiefly due her vast material prosperity, and on this day an Exhibit of this Industry will be presented such as never before been witnessed in this Section. At night a magnificent display of Fire Works and a general illumination of the City will take place.
THIRD DAY - Wednesday, September 25th.
MILITARY AND CIVIC DISPLAY
Presenting a Parade of Military Organizations, Societies, Lodges, Beneficial and Benevolent Associations, etc., etc. Interspersed throughout the three days, under the auspices of the Committees of Amusements, there will be a Free Exhibition of spectacles, sports and Athletic Games, such as Balloon Ascensions by Skilled Aeronauts, with the perilous parachute leap or descent. Lawn Tennis Tournaments, Shooting Matches, Foot Races, night Parade of Boats of the Historic Potomac River, Stereopticon Exhibitions, etc. Open air Band Concerts night and day. The convenience of all visitors will be amply provided for by the Committee on Public Comfort
