City Views On Library Plan Sought

Sources Of Revenue To Be Determined Before Decision

At the suggestion, of Commissioner John Tucker Mason, the Allegany County Board of Commissioners today decided to seek a meeting with the Mayor and Council of Cumberland to discuss the financial aspects of the proposed county library system. Commissioner Mason said the two bodies could explore all avenues of finances in connection with the proposal and if the county was in a position to appropriate the necessary funds, then the city would be asked what support it could give the program Commissioner John J. Rowan said he did not want to be placed in a position of "backing down" on his previously stated opinion in the matter. Rowan said the county can give no consideration to the program for a library unless there are funds available.

Commissioner William A. Wilson said nothing could be lost by meeting with the city officials. He commented that Cumberland has been levying $27,000 annually for several years to operate a library on Washington Street and any financial support it would offer would be much less than that amount.

The library program calls for a budget of $67,500 and $20,000 of this would be in the form of federal aid. In addition, there are available approximately 8,000 volumes from the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore, according to the committee backing the plan.

The meeting of the county board and mayor and council will be for the purpose of discussing what can be done to finance the program. All three county commissioners said they will have to await a compilation of the various budgets before they will know if funds are available.

Melvin Sloan, a resident of Lonaconing, appeared before the board of county commissioners today to give his views on the library proposal. Sloan said he favors the library plan as such, but feels that if the money is not available the county should give final consideration to aiding Miners Hospital in Frostburg and Sacred Heart Hospital here.
