New director getting to know staff.

Four days into his new position as director of the Allegany County Library system John Taube is traveling to the county's branch libraries, getting acquainted with staff and anticipation completion of the system’s automation project. “I am making a point of going to the branches this week, meeting the staff and getting a feel for some of their concerns” said Taube. “I’ve been very impressed by the dedication of this staff.”

Taube, former director of library and instructional technologies at Hagerstown Community College, says this is his first time working with a public library system. But his experience with library automation will be a real plus for Allegany County.

"I’ve automated other libraries and just went through automation of the Hagerstown Community College Library" he said. Taube explained that automation will include development of a Web-based interlace with the system s online catalog, making services much more convenient for patrons and branch libraries.

He noted that automation will also permit patrons to search for library materials from their home computers.

"It’s a good inventory tool, too” said Taube. "We can work from any branch."

He said an update on the automation project would be given during the library board's next meeting Monday

"We are pleased that John has come to Allegany County," said Linda Golden, president of the board of trustees. "He brings with him a variety of skills and abilities that will help to enhance and expand our library services."

Taube holds a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of Michigan and a master of library science degree from the University of Maryland, College Park. His professional experience also includes positions with Georgetown University and the James J. Hill Reference Library in St. Paul, Minn.

Taube, his wife, Suzanne, and 3 year old daughter, Murphy, have recently moved to Cumberland. "This area is just beautiful. Everyone we've met so far has been just as kind as they can be” he said. "I look forward to working with the community and the board of trustees in developing partnerships that will expand the libraries' current services and lead the Allegany County Library System into the 21st century."
