WAR DEPARTMENT
OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF STAFF
WASHINGTON

June 11, 1942.

Major General R. P. Hartle,
Headquarters, U. S. Army,
Northern Ireland Forces.

My dear Hartle:

I have just read your letter of June 2 and appreciate the report, particularly with respect to the overage officers. Your assignment to command the V Army Corps was based on a fine past performance of duty and our confidence in your ability to carry out your important mission in the future.

The other day I received a gracious note from Mrs. Hartle concerning arrangements we have made to transmit brief messages by radio to some of our base commanders. She wrote that she had talked to Wedemeyer who gave her first hand information as to your situation in Ireland.

Do not hesitate to communicate with me at any time concerning any special problems you may have, particularly with regard to the welfare of your men.

Faithfully yours,

[Signed G. Marshall]

Chief of Staff
