WAR DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF STAFF
WASHINGTON

July 24, 1944

My dear Hartle:

The value of your associations with the Navy is appreciated and, were it feasible, an assignment under Admiral Newton would undoubtedly further the excellent relationship which you have established. However, since all immediate vacancies in the Pacific appropriate for one of your rank have been filled, your wishes will receive consideration in making any future assignments to that area. As you probably desire to keep Admiral Newton’s letter for your files, it is being returned herewith.

Mrs. Hartle’s and your personal regards are appreciated and are returned by Mrs. Marshall and me.

Faithfully yours,

[signed G. Marshall]

Chief of Staff

Major General R. P. Hartle,
Commanding General,
Infantry Replacement Training Center,
Camp Fannin, Texas.
