Letter - Hartle to Rex Hartle, 1943

APO 305, New York City

3 June 1943

Rexford B. Hartle, Esq.
Hagerstown, Maryland

My dear Rex:

With reference to your letter of May 17th concerning the ambition of young Jack, please be advised that I am in the utmost sympathy with this worthy goal. I feel, however, that I could not conscientiously meet your request with a letter of recommendation since I am in complete ignorance of his characteristics and aptitude. A letter, such as I would only be able to write, i.e., dealing in generalities, would be futile.

If he has been able to pass his I.Q. tests and if his conduct and leadership qualities have been meritorious during a period of observation by his organization commanders, I am confident that his ambition will be consummated. He is smart and interested enough to realize and practice accordingly; otherwise he would not be a chip off the old block.

With the best of luck to him with many thanks for the other interesting information furnished, and with my very kindest regards to you, the family and our many mutual friends, I am

Most sincerely,

Major General, U. S. Army

General Hartle
