L-R: Yale coach Smoky Joe Wood, Cy Young, Lefty Grove and Walter Johnson, in the dugout at Fenway Park, for the 1939 Old Timers game.

Leslie Jones

Boston Public Library, Print Department

Occasionally Cy Young is seen in photos taken in his retirement years wearing a uniform that says "Old Timers" on its shirt front. This was a souvenir from a special game played in Cleveland in 1921 to celebrate the city's 75th anniversary. It brought back the stars of the past to play a team of sandlot stars and, of course, Cy Young was named to start the game. ... From Baseball Library

Jim Kaplan in Lefty Grove: American Original dates this photo as 1939, Boston Public Library as 1946. Bill Burdick of the Baseball Hall of Fame agrees that Kaplan is correct.
