WAR DEPARTMENT
THE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE
WASHINGTON 25, DC

CITATION FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL

Major General Russell P. Hartle distinguished himself in the performance of exceptionally meritorious service in duties of great responsibility from April 1942 to March 1943. As Commander of the 34th Division he brought to the British Isles the first major contingent of American troops. His success in organising in Northern Ireland an effective Base Command, in the face of serious obstacles, and in cooperating successfully with British authorities is evidence of his unusual competence and leadership. Later as Commanding General, V Corps, and finally as Deputy Theater Commander European Theater, General Hartle maintained the highest level of morale and efficiency amongst our troops, and with great ability contributed to the logistical support of the North African Theater.
