Smithsburg High School

Rexford B. Hartle, Principal Smithsburg, Maryland

May 17 1943

My dear Pete:

Received your letter and was certainly glad to hear from you. I know you are a very busy man now days and do not have many spare hours to write. All who have received letters from you appreciate your thoughtfulness since they know you are doing so under conditions that tries the patience of every American Soldier.

My son Jack has enlisted in the Army and is located at Kearns, Utah. He enlisted on the day he was 18 years of age, the 7th of February.

Pete, Jack would like to have you write him a recommendation for Officer's Training School. If you think it wise for you to do so I would appreciate it. He will receive his high school diploma this June. All the tests he took in the Army were satisfactory. He made good marks in all of them. He has a chance to try for the A-12 training course and needs three letters of recommendation. Jack's full name is Rexford Holmes Hartle.

Met your brother John at Fred's the other evening. He looks fine. Little Robert had been in the hospital. He fell and hurt his head. I believe he is all right now.

I have been very busy this past year with my school duties. The Government has asked we teachers to do so many things that pertain to the War Effort. I believe we are all doing a good job. Our school has sold over $13,000 in bonds. The boys of the school have collected over 80,000 lbs. of scrap iron. The little school at Chewsville takes the prize in selling bonds. They have done a swell job.

Well Pete, here is wishing you the best of luck. I believe you boys over there have Old Hitler on the fence. Keep the good work up. We are all looking for the day when you have completed your task and be back with us.
