GRANTSVILLE, ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD.

July 27, 1861. On Sunday morning, July 21st, at about 3 o'clock, a rumbling noise was distinctly heard in this vicinity, which continued throughout the day until about four o'clock. At the first reports our people did not know what could cause the noise. The sky was clear and there was not the least sign of a coming storm nor thunder. The reports increasing in rapidity, until the number of thirty two was counted within a period of twelve minutes, we came to the conclusion that it must be from the firing of artillery. At times the reports were so audible as to leave no further doubts as to that conclusion, and we felt positive that there must be a battle raging somewhere, either at Piedmont, Romney or Winchester, the nearest places at which it was known to us to be any troops. None supposed it could be so far off as Manassas Junction, yet it proved to be so. This is certainly an item worthy of the notice of scientific men. The distance from Manassas to Grantsville, in a direct line, must be over 100 miles. But the firing was heard upon the Allegany mountain range, thirty miles beyond here. This, I think, is further than Dover from the battle field of Waterloo.
