Feb 5, 1862 - The Treason Bill

The Treason Bill.

This bill will be found in our columns today. Having passed the House, it will doubtless receive the sanction of the Senate without material modification, and soon become a law of the State. It is, therefore, printed in this paper for the information of the people generally, and for the Secessionists especially. This latter class, though not numerous in the county, are as bitter and unrelenting in their hatred of the Federal Government as they were nine months ago, when they thought the State would be handed over to the tender mercies of the rebel Confederacy. These very loyal citizens should read the provisions of this bill with extreme care, so that they may be enabled to continue their sneaking opposition to the Union without exposing themselves to the penalties which said provisions prescribe and impose. They may not like the bill, for it will most assuredly render the treasonable work of accustoming the people to the idea of a dissolution of the Union by insidious and malicious assaults upon the War policy of the Administration, a very dangerous one, but still they should make themselves acquainted with every line of it, for if it is not intended for them, assuredly nobody else will be hurt by it. Let them ponder it carefully, even though they may not admire it, remembering the old adage that

"No rogue e'er felt the halter draw,
With a good opinion of the law."
