Herald of Freedom and Torch Light, Sept 1862 (2-4E War news: Washington County - The rebel dead)

Herald of Freedom and Torch Light, Hagerstown, Md., September 1862, page 2 Click on the MEDIA ITEMS below for more information

The Rebel Dead.

Nearly every person who has gone over the field of the great battle on Wednesday last represents the rebel loss to be at least three to our one. Their dead were thickly strewn over every part of the field, and they left them for our men to bury. The number of dead was so great that up to Monday of this week many of them were still unburied, and the stench for miles around was almost intolerable.
