Dear Col. I will tell you the secret of the whole matter. Col. Miller (our colonel) has had charges of the kind - viz, for habitual drunkenness, adultery, immorality & neglect of duty made against him & sent to Gen. Dix. I am one of the strongest witnesses against him. Yesterday the chaplain of our regiment stepped up to me & said. "Captain, tomorrow the Col. will have you arrested on purpose to cripple you, so that you cannot appear against him." There you have it in a nut shell.
I will not burden you with my wrongs. Still, if you can, I hope you will befriend me.

One thing makes me unpopular here, viz, I will not curse, drink & whore it with the majority of the officers.

Another, I won't see my men treated like dogs. All my difficulty has arisen in my effort to save my own men.
This is a great regiment. The Col. is to be court martialed. The Col has arrested our excellent Major Deems & will court martial him. Lieut. Fibbs is having charges now made against him to cripple him that he cannot appear against the Col.

Most Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
C.H. Russell
